C-10 Research & Education Foundation Prime Mission

For 20 years, C-10 Foundation has been operating a radiological airborne monitoring system in the Massachusetts Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) communities near the Seabrook, NH nuclear power plant.  This system operates continuously to act as an early warning in the event of any unusual release from the Seabrook plant.  C-10 Foundation is pleased to be under contract with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Bureau of Environmental Health.

Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant License Renewal Request

On June 1, 2010, NextEra, Seabrook owners, submitted an application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a license renewal to the year 2050.  NextEra's application is 20 years in advance of their current license which expires in the year 2030.

Seabrook has long-standing groundwater infiltration issues causing corrosion and degradation of plant systems and components.  In researching Seabook's license renewal application, C-10 Foundation determined that it did not contain an adequate age management plan for inaccessible and submerged safety-related cables, transformers, and buried or hard-to-access piping.

Of particular safety concern, NextEra did not include a plan for the moderate to severe Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) concrete degradation of four safety-related buildings in their application.  Seabrook's owners have not yet determined the extent of newly identified ASR concrete degradation or developed an age management plan for 2050.

The C-10 Foundation has supported contentions filed by interveners to Seabrook's relicensing application.  To view the contentions, go to http://adams.nrc.gov/ehd and scroll down to locate Seabrook from the ADAMS list on the left side of the page.
